Hiring a Drone Show Company? Here’s What Most People Get Wrong
The drone light show industry has exploded in the last 3 years, and with it came dozens of new operators — some experienced, some not. Whether you’re planning a corporate event, wedding, or municipal celebration, asking the right questions upfront can save you from a disaster on show night.
1. Are You FAA Part 107 Certified with a Swarm Waiver?
This is non-negotiable. Any company flying more than one drone commercially needs Part 107 certification AND a specific FAA waiver for swarm operations (44809 exemption or Part 107.39 waiver). Ask to see their waiver number. If they hesitate, walk away.
2. How Many Shows Have You Completed Successfully?
Experience matters enormously in drone shows. Weather delays, GPS interference, bird strikes, and software glitches are all real scenarios that only experienced operators know how to handle. Look for companies with 100+ completed shows minimum.
3. What Happens If Weather Cancels the Show?
Professional companies have clear weather policies. At Pixel Swarm Drones, we monitor conditions 72 hours out and offer free rescheduling if winds exceed 20mph or rain is forecast. Some companies keep your deposit regardless — read the fine print.
4. How Many Drones Will Be in My Show?
More drones = more detail and visual impact. Here’s a general guide:
- 50-100 drones: Simple shapes, text, basic logos
- 100-200 drones: Detailed formations, animated transitions, multi-color
- 200-500 drones: Photo-realistic images, complex animations, stadium-scale shows
- 500+ drones: Major events, Super Bowl-level productions
5. Do You Handle All Permits and Airspace Coordination?
A legitimate drone show company handles everything: LAANC authorization, NOTAMs (Notice to Air Missions), local police notification, venue coordination, and noise ordinance compliance. You should never have to pull a permit yourself.
6. What’s Your Insurance Coverage?
Ask for their Certificate of Insurance (COI). Professional operators carry minimum $2-5 million in general liability specifically covering drone operations. Pixel Swarm Drones carries $5 million and can add your venue as an additional insured at no extra cost.
7. Can I See a Portfolio of Past Shows?
Any reputable company will have video footage of past performances. Look for variety — different venues, different formation types, different event categories. If all their footage looks the same or is clearly stock/rendered, that’s a red flag.
